GATE, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, provides an excellent opportunity to achieve your IIT dreams. It is a national-level exam conducted by IISc Bengaluru and the seven IITs, typically scheduled for the first week of February. All Engineering graduates or candidates who have completed 3+2 Hons. Degree in Pure Sciences must register for the GATE exam. A good rank in this exam can lead to highly valuable M.Tech, M.S., or PhD degrees, along with research opportunities from IITs, IISc, and various other universities in and outside India. Moreover, esteemed universities in Germany, Singapore, Canada, and Australia accept GATE scorecards for admission to Masters and PhD degrees, with additional benefits of stipend throughout the course.

The eligibility criteria for GATE are as follows:

1. Engineering students in the 3rd or higher year of their degree can sit for the exam.

2. Students in the 1st Year of M.Sc are also eligible.

3. They must have at least 65% aggregate up to their last given semester before the scheduled GATE exam.

GATE is conducted on various Engineering and Non-Engineering branches with a total of 30 subjects, including the common papers CS-IT, ECE, EE, ME, Civil, Chemical, Biotechnology, and IN (Instrumentation) Engineering. Additionally, the 2024 exam, conducted by IISc Bengaluru, incorporated an additional paper on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA). A candidate can register for a maximum of two papers, for which the combination has to be chosen from a handful of options. For instance, a candidate choosing CS as their 1st paper will be expected to appear for any one of the listed papers as the 2nd paper; DA, ECE, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Geomatics. Similarly, there will be options in other papers too.

The GATE exam is structured as follows:

1. The time duration is 3 hours.

2. It consists of Multiple Choice Questions, Multiple Select Options, and/or Numerical Answer Type Questions.

3. It is held online, similar to JEE Mains (CBT mode).

4. It is divided into two sections; General Aptitude + Selected Subject.

5. The total marks are 100, distributed as follows; Aptitude (15) + Engineering Maths (13) + Selected Core Subjects (72).

6. Each question carries 1 or 2 marks, with a negative marking of 1/3 for 1 mark question and 2/3 for 2 mark questions for every wrong answer. There is no partial marking for Multiple Select Questions. MSQ and NAT questions will have no negative marking.

Apart from academic benefits, several PSUs in India hire GATE-qualified candidates with good ranks (preferably double-digit ranks). In the private sector too, a good rank ensures a higher CTC in the respective branches than their colleagues.
